Pics from the weekend

My sister is a newly-minted PhD. We drove down for her graduation on Saturday and met up w/my friend from high school, James O., who also happened to be in town this weekend. Were we ever lucky he came to the ceremony -- he took a lot of pictures for us, including this one of us and her advisor:

Thanks, James! On Sunday, we drove to Santa Barbara and had lunch at La Super-Rica Taqueria, a taco stand made famous by Julia Childs. She frequented the place when she lived in Santa Barbara.

Here's Q livin' la vida loca outside of La Super-Rica Taqueria.

They make their corn tortillas fresh. The dough is pressed on the waffle-iron-looking thing and then slapped on the griddle.

Clockwise from the top: La Especial Verdura (a vegetable tamale with chayote squash, corn, and a bunch of other vegetables covered with a cream sauce), tri-tip steak with peppers and onions, taco bisteca, La Especial Super-Rica (a most delicious combination of seasoned pork, charred poblano peppers, and cheese on 3 corn tortillas), another beef taco.

Afterwards, we headed 30 miles northwest to Solvang, a replica of a Danish village meant to celebrate the "spirit of the Danish-American pioneer." This is a display of clocks in one of the shops.

Yay for the Super-Rica -- one of the highlights of the trip, I must say! I still need to get copies of your pics from the road trip -- the folder you saved on my computer was empty. I'll get them from you when I see you in 1 week.
