Worst ever?
Following up on moiji's earlier post about the Olympics, I watched the women's figure-skating long program last night w/Aki & Antonia. We made it an all-out Girls' Night In, complete w/carrot cake, brownies, & ice cream (dessert courtesy of Aki), which we gobbled down while mocking the commentators on NBC and watching the skaters fall on their hineys, one after the other. The gold medalist, Shizuka Arakawa, won almost by default because she managed not to fall. Still, it was quite entertaining and, at times, awe-inspiring.
Memorable Quotes from the irrepressible Scott Hamilton and the other 2 clowns providing commentary alongside him:
"These are on track to be Japan's worst Winter Olympics ever." (said before Arakawa won the gold)
"Man, look at the curves on her!" (said of one of the Europeans who wore figure-hugging pants instead of a skirt)
"Now, there's a real lady!" (said of Arakawa after her performance)
"Other girls skate to [the theme from] Romeo & Juliet. She is Juliet." (about Sasha Cohen)
"And ... she ... NAILS IT!!!" - Scott Hamilton, numerous times, followed by more effusive words. As if you couldn't tell, the former champion is on pins & needles waiting for this commentating gig to come around every 4 years.
So I don't know, moiji, maybe the one-word commentary in Japan ("Fast!" "Awesome!") isn't looking so bad after all.
