Once in 100 years

I had a 3-day weekend b/c I got Monday off for my company's 100th anniversary.

Friday I saw Aviva-from-high-school's little sister on "The Look For Less." (Incidentally, Todd Solondz' latest movie Palindromes is about a girl named Aviva who lives in New Jersey). Jordana's all grown up now, working as a freelance writer in Jersey. Anyway, I called Geiosee Froggie to let her know and ended up talking to her while she packed, chatting up until the last possible moment when she had to get ready for bed.

Saturday morning I spent 2 hours reading Stephanie Klein's blog (see new link) after seeing this article in the NYTimes. Maybe I'll start modeling some of my entries after hers to liven up my boring blog. Or maybe not. A detailed description of one's Brazilian wax job might be enlightening but perhaps Too Much Information for the sensibilities of my 1-2 readers.

Aki had me over for dinner Sunday. I made shrimp poached in carrot juice w/Thai spices from a recipe I got out of The Joy of Cooking. It was ... interesting. Subtle. Not something I'm rearing to make any time soon, but not bad. At least it gave me a chance to work with lemongrass. Note to self: Use lemongrass as skewers, like in that picture I saw in Better Homes & Gardens. For dessert we had coconut sorbet with fresh, ripe pineapple. I tried to make a butter rum sauce to go with it from The Joy of Cooking, but it didn't turn out so well. Too much butter for us, but maybe Geiosee Froggie would've liked it.

Today I finally pulled myself out of bed at 11:30 am. The new neighbors' Cocker-Bichon started barking at 7:30 and would not let me relish my morning of sleeping in while everyone else was at work. When I finally got up, I worked on my essays for Baylor & Columbia, which I've been doing all weekend and for the last month, in fact. Anyways, I went out to run some errands. I picked up a nice microplane grater from Linens 'n' Things. When I was checking out, a kid walked in who looked like Fifty Cent and had a bandanna tied around his head. He asked if he could apply for a job even though he was just 16. I felt bad for him b/c he seemed like a nice kid but looked out of place next to the middle aged suburban mom who was checking me out and the perky white teenager who was manning the other register. I hope he gets the job. Then I went to Petsmart and picked up some things for training Fluffy to go to the bathroom inside the apartment. I started tonight by trying to get her to pee on the wee wee pad outside. I think we've got a long road ahead of us.
